ABOUT ME

I am an environmental criminologist, crime scientist, and criminal justice scholar with interests in wildlife crime, wildlife law enforcement, situational crime prevention, policing, and conservation social science. I am an assistant professor and coordinator of the graduate crime analysis certificate program in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Central Florida (UCF). I am a former visiting scholar, and current research fellow, of the wildlife crime cluster at the Netherlands Institute of Crime and Law Enforcement. I am also a research associate at the Rutgers Center for Conservation Criminology and Ecology. I received my doctoral degree from the Rutgers School of Criminal Justice and my bachelors degree from Simon Fraser University.
My research has resulted in numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, one scholarly book, two edited volumes, and six book chapters. My research has appeared in top tier journals, including Justice Quarterly. I have also published in leading subject specific journals like Policing: A Journal of Policy and Practice. Given my research focus, my publications have also reached the international audiences of leading journals like the British Journal of Criminology. I have also added to the development of social science research methods by publishing in the leading journal on qualitative methods, Qualitative Research. To highlight the interdisciplinary nature of my research and my ability to reach an audience beyond the social sciences, I have also published in a leading journal in conservation science, Oryx: The International Journal of Conservation. I am the lead author of the forthcoming book Wildlife Crime: An Environmental Criminology and Crime Science Perspective (Carolina Academic Press) and the editor of the forthcoming volume Wildlife Crime: From Theory to Practice (Temple University Press).
My research has afforded me the possibility to work with a number of great individuals throughout the world, including practitioners with a vested interest in front-line conservation management and monitoring. My applied and practitioner-centered focus led to my recent appointment as an associate of the Ranger Federation of Asia, a practitioner-based organization focused on the ranger profession.
As a result of my research, I am been able to combine two of my passions: academia and travel. For instance, I have been fortunate to visit Angkor Wat in Cambodia and white-water raft the Nile River in Uganda.
Beyond my research, I am also a dedicated teacher and mentor. I have taught a number of courses during my time at UCF. I am currently the doctoral advisor for several students at UCF and I have mentored, both formally and informally, a number of undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students.
